Paper cuttings are an ancient medium through which people in China have passed down their traditions and imagery for centuries. Filled with intricate symbols and often using an archaic visual language, these cuts of light and shadow offer insight into the customs and myths of traditional rural life. They evoke spiritual forces and protective spirits while also serving as splashes of color, wall decorations, and everyday good luck charms.
The exhibition brings together analog originals, artistic montages, and digital simulations:
» Since the 1980s, Ingrid Jansen, a traveler to China, has acquired paper cuttings directly from local peasant women in the remote villages of the Loess Plateau along the Yellow River. This region is considered one of the birthplaces of this folk art. Her collection is unique, encompassing more than four thousand pieces.
» Sinologist and artist Barbara Spielmann immerses elements of these stories into the visual cosmos of today with her experimental collage technique.
» London-based architect Ye Zifeng has brought selected paper cuttings to life using digital stop motion technology and a special soundscape.
