During Munich Jewellery Week 2024, five artists, Ou Jiun-You, Lee Wen-Hsin, Hung Tzu-Yun, Yuan Chung-Yueh, Wang Qi, present their reflections on memory, identity and the relationship between the artist and the essence of art in the group exhibition "PETRIFIED ESSENCE" at GALERIE SHANGHAI. The artistic expressions unfold in a continuous journey - geographically, chronologically and emotionally - that is outlined in various forms of art jewellery.
These artists, perceiving the nuances of transitions between places, translate their experiences into reconstructed materials. They extract or symbolise specific moments and transform them into individual pieces or series that inherently contain an element of deconstruction - from carving, cutting and shredding to deliberately looking away from the materials. In this process, they explore the essence of materials authentically connected to their memories, creating a dialogue between the tangible and intangible.
Amidst the haze of oblivion, the individual can reclaim fragments that reflect their essence by making these pieces the embodiment of their identity. The artworks of these five artists illustrate that travelling reinforces forgetting while enriching the complexity of the materials used. With their works, they challenge perceptions and invite the viewer to reflect on the transience of memory and the enduring presence of identity.
In "PETRIFIED ESSENCE", the artists take us into a realm where the various materials are transformed into jewellery objects marked by the traces of their journey.
