About us

The Confucius Institute Munich was founded in February 2009, initially as the Confucius Classroom Munich, and has since established itself as a central institution for the advancement of Chinese language and culture in and around Munich. In September 2012 it was upgraded to a Confucius Institute.

As well as language courses for all levels and age groups, the Confucius Institute Munich also organises regular cultural events and the Jour Fixe presentation series. It also supports the Land of Bavaria in its relationship with China.

The responsible bodies for the Confucius Institute Munich are Stiftung ex oriente, headquartered in Munich and the  Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).

Tasks and key areas

One of our core activities is teaching Chinese as a foreign language. We offer target-group specific language courses at all levels and for all age groups. We run regular teacher training so that we can guarantee a consistently high quality of teaching. Our teachers teach in companies, schools and our own classrooms. The course system is perfectly coordinated with the new HSK examination system. In 2010 we became one of the first Institutes in Germany to regularly hold these internationally recognised Chinese language examinations.

It is important to us to give a comprehensive and nuanced image of China, and to make it possible to experience Chinese culture with all the senses. Presentations, concerts, exhibitions, film festivals, workshops and presentations with Chinese and German artists and experts provide the space for intercultural dialogue. Projects to promote exchanges between German and Chinese youth or adults are also part of our portfolio.

In cooperation with schools and other cultural and educational institutions we also hold regular courses and workshops for children and youth.

Confucius Institutes worldwide

The first Confucius Institute was opened in Seoul, Korea in 2004, and there are now more than 500 Institutes worldwide, 19 of which are in Germany. The Confucius Institutes are always non-profit. They orient themselves toward the standards of European language and cultural institutes, for example the Goethe-Institut in Germany.

Their goal is to teach Chinese language and culture. In contrast to the Goethe-Institut, Confucius Institutes are always supported cooperatively by one Chinese partner and one local partner. They each develop their own profile, and adapt their offering to the local conditions and requirements. They also have free choice when it comes to teaching materials.
