Study in China with a Confucius Institute scholarship!

For school-leavers, higher education students and young professionals.

Where can you learn Chinese better than in China?

Every year the Center for Language Education and Cooperation awards scholarships to Chinese learners for a study trip to a university in China.

We support the application of our course participants!

Universities

Depending on the scholarship category, applicants can select from more than 100 universities. The list of universities can be found online on the Confucius Institute scholarship website (http://www.chinese.cn). Subjects such as Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy, TCM, Chinese music or Chinese dance are offered. Our partner university is the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) in Beijing.

Applications for the 2025/2026 academic year

The application period begins on March 1, 2025.

The application deadline for the Winter Semester 2025 is May 15, 2025 (Beijing Time).
The application deadline for the Summer Semester 2026 is October 31, 2025 (Beijing Time).

Available study places are limited. We encourage you to apply early to increase your chances of securing a spot at your preferred university.

To find out if you qualify for a scholarship, please refer to the following section:

  1. Current and former students of the Confucius Institute Munich who have completed at least two language courses at the institute (proof of two course certificates).

  2. Private students and participants of corporate courses.

  3. Winners of the Chinese Bridge competitions (汉语桥).

  4. Chinese language teachers and those aspiring to become one (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language).

Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 35 on September 1, 2025, and must not hold Chinese citizenship. (For the ChaF scholarships, the requirements are: Chinese language teachers under 45 years of age, and undergraduate students under 25 years of age.)

1. Scholarship for one semester

Start in September 2025 or March 2026

Fields of Study: Teaching Chinese as a foreign language, Chinese literature, history and philosophy, and others.

Application Requirements:

  • valid HSK level 3 certificate with at least 180 points
  • valid HSKK certificate (oral) of elementary level or higher
  • applicants who have received a similar scholarship in the last three years are not eligible for this scholarship

Application deadline is May 15, 2025 for a study place from September 2025 and October 31, 2025 for a study place from March 2026. Beijing time applies to the application deadline.

 
2. Scholarship for one academic year

Start in September 2025

2.1 Subject: Chinese as a Foreign Language

Application requirements:

  • valid HSK level 3 certificate with at least 270 points
  • valid HSKK certificate (oral) of elementary level or higher
  • applicants who have received a similar scholarship in the last three years are not eligible for this scholarship

2.2 Subjects: Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy

Application requirements:

  • valid HSK certificate of level 4 with at least 180 points
  • valid HSKK certificate (oral) of the intermediate level with at least 60 points

2.3 Subject: Chinese Language

Application requirements:

  • valid HSK level 3 certificate with at least 210 points
  • applicants with an HSKK certificate will be given preference

Application deadline is May 15, 2025, Beijing time applies.

3. Scholarships for learning TCM or Taiji

3. Scholarships for learning TCM or Taiji

Scholarship for one semester

Start in September 2025 or March 2026

Application Requirements:

  • valid HSK certificate
  • Applicants with an HSKK certificate will be given preference

Application deadline is May 15, 2025 for a place starting in September 2025 and October 31, 2025 for a place starting in March 2026. Beijing time applies to the application deadline.

 

4. Scholarships for Chinese teachers (ChaF)

4. Scholarships for Chinese teachers (ChaF)

The Center for Language Education and Cooperation awards scholarships to Chinese teachers, e.g.:

  • Doctoral programme "Chinese as a foreign language"
    • HSK 6 (200 points) and HSKK advanced (60 points)
    • The scholarship is provided for a maximum of 4 years
  • Master programme "Chinese as a foreign language"
    • HSK 5 (210 points) and HSKK intermediate (60 points)
    • The scholarship is provided for a maximum of 2 years
  • Bachelor programme "Chinese as a foreign language"
    • HSK 4 (210 points) and HSKK intermediate (60 points)
    • The scholarship is provided for a maximum of 4 years

5. Scholarship scope

The scholarship covers the complete tuition fees, accommodation, a monthly living allowance and health insurance. Accommodation is generally in a student residence (twin room) on campus. Anyone who, with the permission of the university, lives off campus will receive a monthly rental cost allowance of 700 RMB.

The monthly living allowance (2500 RMB/month) is paid by the university.

If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please first contact your course instructor or directly reach out to Dr. MIAO Yulu at our institute.

Next, create your own account on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website http://www.chinese.cn and complete the application form. If you have any questions, we are happy to assist you.

We will forward the applications of suitable candidates to the accepting universities in China. The final selection will then be made by the universities and submitted to the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban. A final decision will be made, and the selected candidates will be notified about the success of their application.

Applicants can track their application process and results through their own account on http://www.chinese.cn.

7. Application documents

7. Application documents

The application takes place completely online on the page http://www.chinese.cn. Please have the following documents ready in digital form for uploading:

  • Copy of the passport photo page
  • Copy of the HSK and HSKK certificates (not older than two years)
  • Letter of recommendation and two course certificates from the Confucius Institute Munich
  • Letter of motivation (800 Chinese characters)
  • Highest graduation certificate, or a certified translation (English or Chinese)

Applicants for the "ChaF" programmes also need:

  • Two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from their university professors
  • Employment contract or future work agreement if available

For applicants under 18 years of age:  Statement from the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) about the transfer of responsibility to a custodian in China.

Winners of the Chinese Bridge competition:

  • Winner of the Germany final: Certificate and letter of recommendation from the competition organiser
  • Winner of the China final: Scholarship certificate

8. Granting of the scholarship

8. Granting of the scholarship

The results will be announced by the Center for Education and Cooperation. The accepting institutes/universities will send the admission notice and visa form to the applicants.

9. Enrolment

The scholarship holder must enrol at the university before the expiry date stated on the letter of admission, otherwise the entitlement to a scholarship expires. Anyone who cannot enrol in time must inform the university of their reasons within 15 days before the enrolment deadline.
